Every Day Debit Card Overdraft Changes

Newton Federal wants you to be prepared!

Currently:
Some Newton Federal checking accounts come with our overdraft protection program. That means that we may authorize and pay everyday debit card transactions even though you do not have enough money in your account to cover the transaction. We offer this service as a convenience and to provide a safety net to our customers, and we charge a $32.00 fee for the service.

After August 15, 2010:
The overdraft protection currently made available to you for everyday debit card transactions will only be available if you agree or "opt-in" to this protection. If you have not opted-in by August 15 your transactions will be declined when you are at the cash register or gas pump and do not have enough funds in your account to cover it. We allow your account to overdraw as a courtesy even when you do not have the funds to avoid embarrassment.

This new rule does not cover check or automatic bill payments that you may have set up for paying bills such as your mortgage, rent, or utilities. Newton Federal Bank will still automatically enroll you in their standard overdraft services for these types of transactions.

Ways to avoid overdrafts:
Keep track of account balance and transactions (Newton Federal offers online and telephone banking.)
Keep a "cushion" of extra funds in the account
Link your account to a savings account

The links below provide additional information as well as the opt-in form. You may bring the form to any branch location, fax it to 770-787-9290, or mail it to:

P.O. Box 1037
Covington, GA 30015

Remember to select "Opt In" to continue receiving overdraft protection privileges on your everyday debit card transactions.
